NCT Southwark Branch Newsletter – Winter 2007

Set up in March this year, Mums in Business is a new NCT group for entrepreneurial mums. The group gets together every month to provide a sounding board for ideas, swap contacts and drink the odd glass of wine.

The group was set up by our former Membership Secretary Jessica MacGregor, in part to add to the services that the branch can provide to mothers beyond their first year of membership, but mainly because she knew of several mothers in the area who were setting up on their own who might benefit from sharing their experiences.

There’s a huge variety of businesses that have been set up. Some mothers have become freelancers in their original fields, while others have branched out into something completely new. One unexpected benefit of the group is that some of the mums can offer their services (such as marketing consulting or graphic design) to others within the group.

Most mums within the group have chosen to set up businesses that reflect their new role as mothers, from salsa lessons for tots to selling wooden toys. Many also have a green theme with environmentally friendly cleaning materials, washable nappies and organic skincare ranges being among the Mums in Business portfolio. Others, however, have taken a completely different course. Claire Empson is an active member of the branch and a freelance graphic designer. Since the birth of her two sons and the foundation of Mums in Business, Claire and her partner Eliot have also welcomed Daisylets.com into the world. Claire’s letting and property management agency aims to look after landlords’ properties as if they were their own. Their eye-catching logo can currently be seen around the Dulwich area promoting the NCT’s Craft Fair on their colourful boards.
